Kraft Foods

Railion, DB AG's freight railway, has been transporting raw coffee for Kraft Foods, the food manufacturer, since 1993. In total, some 1,500 trains have been run since then with an annual average of 100 transports. This cooperation is worthwhile in many ways. "Long before the present climate debate, we started to use this environmentally friendly transport concept to reduce CO2 emissions and make a contribution to climate protection," explains Rudi Madel, director of all four Kraft Foods' coffee plants in Germany. With the logistics train between Bremen and Berlin, it has so far been possible to save nearly 100,000 truck trips and thus just under 35,000 tonnes of CO2.

SBB Cargo

Fertrans

SNCF

The STVA Group is a logistic solutions supplier for the automotive sector of finished vehicles. Managing a park of 4 000 cars and 865 convoys cars carriers, the Transport Society of Automotive Vehicles is a key figure on the market of the vehicles distribution in Europe. Determinedly engaged in a perspective of sustainability, the Direction of Quality Methods and Environment is in charge of leading the Group's sustainable development policy, one of the main directions of its policy being the decrease of CO2 emissions generated by the transportation activities. Keeping in mind that it is necessary to measure before acting, having a reliable and complete tool becomes essential. That is why, after a complete benchmark of the existing European tools, Ecotransit was selected to calculate the CO2 emissions of the railroad mode on a daily basis (with no less than 240 requests during the first half of the year 2008, STVA is one of the most important French users!). According to Mr Lupoglazoff, in charge of the sustainable development at STVA, several arguments justify this choice:

  1. A clear and reliable information
  2. A proven European LCA methodology
  3. Credible results with regard to the market and in adequacy with formulae and models used to measure the CO2 emissions
  4. A European geographical cover (EU 25)
  5. Precise routings, i.e. respectful of the modal networks
  6. An expert mode which allows a fine piloting (i.e. empty returns, load factor) close to the reality of the STVA logistic
In March 2007 the STVA Group made a commitment to the Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development (MEDAD) and the ADEME by being part of the 6 pioneer signatory companies of the charter of voluntary commitment to reducing their CO2 emissions. In 2008, several hundreds tons of Co2 were saved as compared with 2007. A good example of voluntarism for the industrial world
