Scientific Support

EcoTransIT operates on a sound scientific basis with data that is accepted Europe-wide. The Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (ifeu), Heidelberg, is in charge of the scientific issues such as the environmental data. Ifeu used the Handbook on Emission Factors for Road Transport (HBEFA), data from the Assessment and Reliability of Transport Emission Models and Inventory Systems (ARTEMIS), the ecoinvent database and others. The German Federal Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA) provided data for the environmental compatibility of various transport modes car, a truck, rail, inland waterways and aircraft. The technical implementation and development of the relevant software were carried out by RMCon.

Rail Management Consultants GmbH, Hannover

Rail Management Consultants GmbH (RMCon), is a rail transport management and software development enterprise.

Fields of activity:

• Consulting about rail infrastructure, rail transport service (passenger and freight transport), vehicle employment concepts and route management,
• Development and marketing of simulation -, arrangement and routing systems and their application in the context of own consultant activities as well as
• Commitment in research projects.
• Railsys training and advanced training courses, Railsys-Projectmanagement, coaching, workshops and user days.

In the scope of consulting RMCon accomplishes a multiplicity of national and international projects. With the slot and infrastructure management as well as network simulation system RailSys RMCon offers railway infrastructure and transport enterprises here and abroad an efficient software product for the optimization of infrastructure and operation. RailSys is developed in close co-operation with the
Institute of Transport, Railway Construction and Operation, University of Hanover.

IFEU

IFEU, the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, was founded in 1978. Since then IFEU has established itself as an independent centre of excellence for environmental research. Its expertise covers areas like environmental implications of transport, energy supply and renewable energy sources, life cycle assessment, air pollution control, sustainable development, environmental impact assessment and environmental management.

The basic methodology for the environmental calculations was developed for EcoTransIT by IFEU in cooperation with the participating railway companies. IFEU also compiles and regularly updates the environmental input data.

Öko-Institut e.V.

The Öko-Instiut is an Institute for Applied Ecology and was founded in 1977 by a group of engineers, physicists, chemists, jurists and theologians. The aim of this group was to gain and protect the human livelihood. The Öko-Institut is an independent research and consultancy institution.

The methodology for the environmental calculations for EcoTransIT-World concerning aviation and maritime shipping was developed by the Öko-Institut.
