2nd EcoTransIT World Stakeholder Workshop 18 April at Hapag-Lloyd HQ

The EcoTransIT consortium presented new Business Solutions of its multimodal emissions calculator and welcomed Hapag-Lloyd and Gebrueder Weiss as new partners.

Hosted by Hapag-Lloyd, the latest member of the consortium, the 2nd EcoTransIT World stakeholder workshop took place in Hamburg on April 18, 2012.

68 attendees from different business sectors, shippers, carriers and logistics service providers, discussed methodological and business approaches to calculate greenhouse gas emissions in the transport industry. Key note speeches of EU Commission DG Move and World Economic Forum (WEF) contributed the political and business perspective to this discussion. The French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) explained the basic requirements of the upcoming European standard prEN 16258 on transport emission calculation to be executed by the end of 2012.

With contributions of the three industry initiatives Green Freight Europe (GFE), Clean Cargo Working group (CCWG) and NTM the workshop opened the floor to a new platform of networking and exchanging experience – a platform across companies and modes searching for alignment of data and methodologies.

All together there was a unanimous spirit to acknowledge recent tool developments and alignment efforts thereto by all industry stakeholders. Namely the examples of company-customized use of EcoTransIT Business Solutions, as presented by the latest EcoTransIT consortium members Hapag-Lloyd and Gebrueder Weiss, were appreciated a lot. Thus the workshop was a strong signal to the whole sector to join in this process, make use of available solutions and actively contribute with own experience to the further alignment process.

On 30th March of 2011, the online calculator EcoTransIT World received the 11th Logistics Innovations Awards during the International Trade Show Logistics Solutions in Paris. EcoTransIT has been selected among 12 projects entered for the competition under the category “Most innovative transport and logistics solution supporting sustainability”.

The jury, composed of eight experts from the supply chain management and sustainable development sectors, appreciated the innovative tool as well as its organization:

  • Innovative product: The free online access to the tool and specific features to realize mass calculation services consequently adapted to the needs of shippers and carriers
  • Innovative methodology: An exhaustive methodology considering each modal specificity combined with worldwide coverage of multidmodal networks
  • Innovative structure: A synergetic partnership of various international logistics actors and specialists working all together to develop and disseminate a common eco-calculator

EcoTransIT’s methodology for calculating the environmental impacts has been developed by independent scientific institutions: The Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU), the Institute for Applied Ecology and the Institute of Transport, Railway Construction and Operation (IVE). In coordination with the International Union of Railways (UIC), the European network of seven railway companies and a logistics company guarantees the periodical updating of data and enriches the partner frame of the project.

This award is recognition for twelve years of continuous work, a tribute to the strong engagement of all partners to create a best practice standard of carbon accounting in the freight and logistics sector. With EcoTransIT World the consortium actually offers version no. 4 of the tool.

First EcoTransIT Stakeholder Workshop in Paris

On 5th of October of 2010 the 1st EcoTransIT Stakeholder Workshop took place in Paris. More than 100 participants representing the whole transport sector – logistics companies, shippers, forwarders, air, ocean and land carriers, scientific and non-governmental organisations – attended the meeting. They actively shared the discussion on needs and benefits of a reliable and easy-to-use carbon calculator for global supply chains. Keynote speeches from United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), European Environment Agency (EEA) and the EU project SuperGREEN welcomed the EcoTransIT initiative and highlighted their views on carbon footprinting as steps towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In the end it was common sense to continue the dialogue and intensify cooperation.

Launch of EcoTransIT World

On 26th of May 2010, Mr Loubinoux and Dr. Volker Kefer, Board Member of Deutsche Bahn’s Technology and Services, successfully launched the innovative web application EcoTransIT World at the 2010 International Transport Forum in Leipzig. “Low transport emissions are an increasingly significant sales argument. EcoTransIT World aims to help customers to choose their means of transport and the most environment-friendly transport chain”, explained Dr. Volker Kefer. The tool offers open access to forwarders, carriers and logistics service providers and gives free and reliable information on their carbon footprint in line with upcoming standards of green accounting.

Jean-Pierre Loubinoux explained that “with EcoTransIT World we can provide reliable carbon footprints of logistics chains with all transport modes on a global level. EcoTransIT World offers an important contribution to the ongoing discussions on how to measure greenhouse gas impacts of the transport sector. It provides a scientifically proved, fair and balanced methodology approved by neutral environmental institutions.”

The next step is to invite interested partners to cooperate and join the “EcoTransIT World” consortium. The idea is to jointly build the sector standard for carbon foot printing and thus support reducing transport emissions and greening logistical chains.
